I can't understand why owners think they should exceed a manufacturer's specified service schedule, it just seems like a total waste of time and money to me but this argument has been around the block before with no solid facts to back up the practise.

Why not? Just because you don't do it why can't someone else? Changing the engine oil more often than what the manufacturer specifies is doing absolutely no harm whatsoever. I have always done 6 month intervals on my cars and it gives me piece of mind to know that the engine has clean good quality oil in it, and gives me pleasure because i like working on my cars and it gives me the opportunity to have a look around the engine bay and make sure i have no leaks, worn out belts etc etc.

It's like saying why do some people have 2 showers per day when you only really need to have 1.

    +1,
...and who wants to waste time to prove that manufacturers specified intervals are too long? Most importantly to convince someone who wants to save money on everything.

If you want the proof, look it up on the internet yourself, how cleaner oil and also improved filtration extended life of the engine. Of course you have to start with good and reliable engine. I don’t need the proof, I’ve seen enough engines that lasted long time with a good maintenance and seen plenty neglected ones fail well before their designed life was up.

So our cars which have averaged under 4000km a year should be done at 6 month intervals just to keep the oil clean. Get real its clean after 12 months

Doesnt even lool like its been in an engine

The colour is not a reliable indicator of the oil condition. Not every contaminant discolours the oil. Though, your owners manual is most likely saying “change the engine oil more often if you drive under severe driving conditions”. With 4,000km per year, you’re most likely fitting in that category.

Id argue you dont even need a car if you do less than 4,000km per year. I do around 7-8,000km and i hardly use it.

[VIC] Wanting to do first oil change 2019 Golf R, where to buy all the parts?

Most of the engine wear happens in the first 5 minutes of starting before the oil is up to operating temperature.

There’s a case for more regular oil changes if the car is used for a lot of short trips.

But at the end of the day it’s up to the individual and how long they expect to keep the car. Most people that buy a new car aren’t going to be affected by the maintenance (or lack of) that gets done to the car. It will likely be the second or third owner that ends up with the repair bills.

So unless you’re going to keep the car for “life” then you’re probably best off just servicing according to the schedule and getting the book stamped accordingly as this will help to retain max value.

I do however subscribe to an early first oil change. Once the engine is worn in to dump the oil and start fresh. I’d say 5,000km is when the engine starts to free up.

Well i did an oil change on our SQ5 on the weekend. It was last serviced at 29,000km (about 7 months ago) and now has 36,000km. The oil was jet black so if nothing else, i have gotten rid of that muck and the car now has 7L of golden Penrite Enviro+ 5w-30 and a new oil filter.

For the sake of less than $100 and an hour of my time on a lazy weekend, i have peace of mind that the engine has nice fresh oil and i got to have a good look at everything underneath the car to make sure nothing is worn/broken/leaking and give give all the bits and pieces a bit of a clean.

I think that even if you keep your car only for 5 years and sell it when the warranty runs out, it’d be in a better condition and therefore you could get more for it. The potential buyer could be enthusiast and would see it as a better car than the one that was serviced every 15,000km or sometimes it’s more than 15,000km and more than 12 months.

The 15,000km is just a bit long interval for the turbo engine, especially if you do short trips.

I’d never buy a secondhand car because people who keep it for 3 years they don’t look after it and money I save would be spent on the repairs.
